THE NETWORKING MISTAKE THAT'S HOLDING YOU BACK

One of my clients recently told me: "I met a few senior alumni, saw open roles in their companies, reached out… and heard nothing back. Does networking even work?"

This isn’t the first time I’ve heard this. And here’s what I told her:

People don’t like being contacted only when there’s a job on the table—unless they’re already close friends.

But when you reach out before there’s a job, purely to learn about their experiences? They’re much more open to connecting.

The Right Way to Network

Instead of, messaging someone only when you need a job. 

Try this:

• Build relationships before you need them.
• Have coffee chats, ask about their career journey.
• Stay in touch—so when a job opens up, they think of you first.

Networking isn’t about quick wins. It’s about playing the long game.
