NETWORKING CONVERSATIONS TO OPPORTUNITIES
Aug 23, 2023You may be in a situation where you have spoken to multiple people and had a dozen coffee conversations. But they are not translating to opportunities.
A lot of people feel that networking doesn’t help because they don’t see these informal meetings converting into opportunities.
Here is the fact!
A person needs to have at least 7 touch points and 3-4 conversations before they can trust you enough to bring opportunities..
This is the number one reason why all those amazing interactions didn’t become jobs! So, the catch is “How can I speak to these senior people 3-4 times?”
The answer is simple! Simple, not easy.
It is called Advice Triangle. I heard this from Austin Belcak a few years ago!
There are just 3 simple steps:
- Even before the meeting, think of any advice you will ask this person. As specific as possible.
- After the meeting, take a small step towards actioning that advice.
- Go back to them with an update and how this advice is helping you. And mention the next steps you will be taking to work on it.
Voila! You are now building some serious credibility
Reason:
Most people love to take advice and have coffee chats. Very few take action on the advice offered. Even fewer update the person and acknowledge them for their advice.
With this simple step, you show yourself as an action-taker. And they start getting invested in your job search success!
So, think of your networking as relationship building
It takes some time and effort but the results outshine any transactional conversation!
