HOW MY CLIENT TAUGHT ME A LESSON IN NETWORKING
Aug 14, 2024A client of mine started work recently! As a career coach, I promise to be with them in their first month of onboarding.
This usually entails having sessions to:
1. Close existing loops
2. Consider their short-mid-long term plans for the role
3. Make the right first impression internally and externally
What Most People Miss
Before we dive in, it's important to understand what people miss in this period:
- They forget to close the loop with existing opportunities
- They forget to thank everyone who helped them
- They forget to update their larger network
As I was emphasizing with this client the need to update existing opportunities, he shared a mindblowing thing he did.
He not only updated the relevant person in his existing opportunities, he also reached out to his network and referred good profiles for those roles.
In one action, he helped:
- The hiring team
- His network whom he referred
- Himself by building strong social capital
He helped them when he didn't need anything from them. And that has a much bigger impact in networking than helping for something in return!
