GET YOUR NETWORKING TO WORK

Sep 13, 2023

Last week, we spoke about why people are hesitant to help in your job search even though it benefits them in multiple ways.

And the main reason for that is…. they don’t trust you enough YET!

A Gallup survey mentioned that it takes people about 4 meaningful conversations before they can trust you. Most job seekers expect help during the initial conversation.

Let’s look at different steps you can take to build trust with your network.

Step 1: Strong Personal Brand

Building a strong personal brand has the biggest impact on creating trust with your network.

Can you think of people you have never met before but still think highly of? They are typically very good at building trust through social media and we all have access to it! If you are not comfortable creating content, start by commenting!

Step 2: Give before you take

Think of ways in which you can give to them before asking. Giving here doesn’t mean anything big. It could be engaging with their content (once you do it consistently for 4-5 times, you start becoming a familiar name)

Or make an introduction in your network which may be helpful.

Step 3: Don’t ask too much upfront

When you send a connection request, just ask to be connected.

When you meet them, focus on building connection. Ask about their experience in the organization and get advice on how you can navigate job search.

Step 4: Effective follow-up

This is where most people fall short. I know many people who are great at getting the coffee chats going and then nothing after that. This is also the biggest differentiator.

After your meeting with them, note down their advice and also a few areas of interest. Take the smallest action on their advice and go back to update them on how it is going without asking anything.

If you come across anything related to their interests, share it with them.

Now, you are no longer following up asking for leads and jobs but more to keep them in the loop and build relationship.

This is where magic happens.

Long process, maybe! But way better results than anything else.

I have had clients get roles created for them by building relationships with the right people.

And I wish you get to experience that outcome too.
