A VERY UNDER-USED JOBSEARCH STRATEGY

Oct 18, 2023

I once worked with a client who interviewed to the advanced stages for one of the FAANG companies. Unfortunately, she did not go through the final stages.

When she got the message from the recruiter, she sent an email thanking the organization and sharing how much she enjoyed conversing with everyone and if there is another opportunity, she would like to be considered.

6 months later, she was approached for another role in the organization and she ended up getting that position!

Even as a recruiter, I have had multiple cases where the hired candidate did not start in the company or did not turn out to be a good fit during probation.

Do you know who becomes the first preference in those cases, the next suitable candidate especially if that person took a moment to express strong interest in being considered for other opportunities within that organization?

“But Shub, won’t I look desperate if I beg for a role after rejection?”

Depends on how you do it!

  1. Do this only after you have been interviewed by the hiring manager.
  2. Your email is to thank them for the opportunity and showing interest in the organization, not asking them to give you another chance or reconsider their decision.
  3. If you have had a few interactions with the hiring manager, you can also offer to stay in touch for any industry discussions.

Send the email to the recruiter as well as the hiring manager.

It takes literally 5 mins and can help to build connections with someone with whom you have had in-depth career discussion.
