3 SKILLS TO FUTURE-PROOF YOUR CAREER

As a recruiter and career coach, I have seen people:

Interacting with professionals and leaders on a daily basis, there are 3 main skills that people who have a thriving career seem to have in common.

Skill 1: Continuous Learning

I don’t mean continuous learning in terms of formal education.

In fact, when people ask me if they should pursue higher education/ certifications/ diploma, I always tell them that if the purpose is learning and upskilling – absolutely yes!

But if you are doing this only to be able to land a job, then I would hold off! So, what do I mean by continuous learning?

  • Learning about new skills/ tools/ trends
  • Deep diving in a particular topic
  • Industry news and case studies

And we are in the midst of creator economy where learning has never been easier.

  • Majority of Ivy Leagues have made their courses available online for free
  • YouTube
  • Coursera
  • Udemy
  • Skillshare
  • LinkedIn learning
  • Digital courses on specific topics by your favorite creator
  • SkillsFuture approved courses at highly discounted rates

and much much more!

Skill 2: Strong Personal Brand

Your Market Value = Performance X Visibility

The best time to build your brand was 20 years back, the second best time is now!

Share your learnings and knowledge on LinkedIn (Easiest for professional branding). This is how you go from seeking jobs to being sought after.

And if you are just starting, here is a very simple step that you can start taking from today itself!

Skill 3: Relationship Building

I hate using “Networking” as people just leave common courtesy to ask strangers for big favours or just adopt a “Me, Me, Me” mindset!

If you are looking at future-proofing your career, it is very important to take a long-term approach.

Think of building relationships over a few interactions, some effort but huge benefits!

  • Reach out to 1 person in your network just to check-in to continue building your social capital
  • Use your personal brand to expand your network
  • Think of how you can add value first before asking for a favour
