HOW YOUR RESUME CONTENT NEEDS TO BE WRITTEN!
Feb 07, 2024I spent the last weeks welcoming a new cohort of MBA students and doing CV reviews.
A recurrent theme in all our conversations was how they were structuring the content of their experience.
- I can’t quantify my experience
- I don’t want to inflate my contribution to look like it was all me
- As a consultant, I always worked in teams and we didn’t stay for implementation
All valid concerns.
Here is my recommended structure:
(Micro) Action +Scope + (Macro) Impact
- Start with a strong action verb but be specific about what you did – be as specific as possible.
- Be macro in impact – How did it affect the project/ team/ company (projection in revenue increase may be 8-9 figures).
This also allays concerns of “Am I inflating numbers?”
By being Micro in action, you are only taking credit for your action. But it is very difficult to quantify impact of each micro action.
So we go macro in Impact
For eg. “Led digital marketing campaign for XYZ product across 5 countries in APAC, leading to an overall growth of 200% in revenue”
There would be a lot of things that led to revenue growth including actual sales teams’ efforts and some traditional marketing.
By stating that your contribution was leading digital marketing campaign, you are being specific about your contribution.
Otherwise, it is very difficult to break down the impact of each person’s action!
Sometimes, a small tweak may contribute to big impact – we will never know!
Now, look at your resume bullet points and see if you follow this structure.
